Sydney’s Premier Queer-Owned Wedding Photographer

Henry Paul Photography: for the love of your life.

It’s been a pretty wild 10 years in business. I started out photographing weddings for friends at church while I was in high school. After I came out, I moved to Sydney to pivot the business to be Australia’s leading eco-ethical wedding photographer. And today, off the back of receiving a nomination for the ACON Honour 2022 Business Award, I’m proud to be Sydney’s premier queer-owned wedding photographer.

So what’s new?

Truthfully, not a lot. Consider it a re-brand if you will, but not the visual kind. Instead, I’m putting my value for inclusion at the forefront of my business from now on and will be crafting brand messaging in the business that makes *all* couples feel safe, seen and celebrated.

I’ve also introduced a new tagline for the business too: “For the love of your life.”

Filled with double meanings and subject to interpretation, this new tagline epitomises everything I believe is beautiful about documenting humans in love. Fine art photography is a gift for your loved ones. It is an excuse to commemorate the love you share. It presents an opportunity to capture lifelong memories. For the love of your life.

What does it mean to be queer-owned?

When a business is queer-owned it means that it is owned and operated by a member of the LGBTQ+ community. There has been a growing trend in the last 2 or 3 years for queer-owned businesses to lead with their queer-owned status as a point of difference in a capitalist market.

For me, embracing. my own queerness has led to prioritising my well-being, exploring my individuality and deconstructing societal norms. And if I’m honest, I want to do everything in my power to bring those themes into my business and the broken capitalist system that we’ve inherited.

Will you still photograph non-queer weddings in Australia?

Absolutely! One of the biggest joys of my life has been getting to photograph humans in love – any humans in love. Henry Paul Photography is a place where all couples are affirmed and welcome, regardless of their gender identity, sexuality, race, age, religion, body size or disability. I will work my butt off to make you feel safe, seen and celebrated.

What do you do besides wedding photography?

In addition to being Sydney’s premier queer-owned wedding photographer, I am the CEO of Hank Paul Company, which is my parent company. Hank Paul Co’s mission is to make business more inclusive – so I believe building an inclusive business is the first step in proving this model to be impactful and profitable.

I created Queer Wedding Ally Training as a way to teach other wedding professionals how to “inclusify” their businesses to make other LGBTQ+ couples feel safe and seen. It won’t surprise anyone to hear that the wedding industry is incredibly heteronormative, and with 90% of queer people expecting to experience discrimination during their wedding planning journey, I knew I had to do something to make life a little better for my queer siblings.
